5 members of the West Nautical Team completed the Great North Run in support of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

A team of 5 from West Nautical have been raising money for the RNLI by running the Great North Run on September 11th.

After Geoff and Sarah Moore's successes in last year’s Great North Run, it was decided that West Nautical would enter a team to take part this year. Our team is made up of Lou Mitchell, Shaun and Kasia Moore, Ashleigh Newton and Sarah Moore.

For those of you not familiar with the run, the Great North Run is the world’s largest half marathon (13.1 mile) event with over 57,000 runners every year. Starting in Newcastle upon Tyne, the route takes runners through the city centre towards the River Tyne and over the iconic Tyne Bridge. From there runners will travel through Gateshead and onto South Shields on the North Sea coast where the welcome sight of the finish line awaits.

The West Nautical team completed the run on behalf of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. The RNLI charity was founded, with royal patronage, originally as the National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck in 1824, this was later re-named the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) in 1854. The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea and provides an on call 24-hour search and rescue service around the UK and Ireland, and a seasonal lifeguard service on over 200 UK and Channel Island beaches. The RNLI also operates a Flood Rescue Team, both in the UK and abroad, and you can learn more about their history here.

RNLI Community Fundraising Manager, Anne Scott, said: ‘As a charity reliant on donations, fundraising for the RNLI by running in the Great North Run really helps our volunteers to continue saving lives at sea. We’re very grateful to West Nautical for choosing to run this fun but challenging half marathon for us, helping to ensure we continue to have vital kit and training to operate a 24-hour search and rescue service.’

The RNLI runs entirely on public donations, receiving no Government funding and it costs around £410,000 a day to operate the RNLI, rescuing on average 24 people a day.
